Morrisville women open season in convincing fashion, top Cazenovia 73-41

Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville women's basketball team opened the 2021-22 season Monday night in convincing fashion, controlling visiting Cazenovia College from the opening whistle as they picked up the 73-41 dominating win on their home court in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • SUNY Morrisville women's basketball dominated from the opening whistle to claim a 73-41 non-conference season opening win over Route 20 Rival Cazenovia Monday night in Morrisville.
  • In an all-around team effort, Morrisville had three collect double figures in the win, including Rachel Vieira (Caruthers, N.Y.) who led the hosts with 12 points on her 5-for-9 shooting.
  • Taylor Colone-Microni (Oneonta, N.Y.) and Delimar Vega-Haley (Worcester, N.Y.) each added 10, with Colone-Microni having a perfect shooting night on her 4-of-4 attempts from the floor that included two perfect shots from long range.
  • Brooke Hammersley (Weedsport, N.Y.) notched nine points to go along with her two rebounds and four steals, while a trio of newcomers added eight points each.
  • Dezia Becker (Endicott, N.Y.) collected eight in her collegiate debut while adding four rebounds and two steals, while teammate Cara Walker (Phelps, N.Y.) also registered eight points to go along with four rebounds.
  • Carli Pardee (South Kortright, N.Y.) notched eight as well, dishing out a team high four assists.
  • Morrisville came out firing on all cylinders from the opening tip, outgaining the Wildcats 19-9 come first quarter end as they shot 60% from the floor.
  • Cazenovia struggled to stop the fast-pace offensive unit as Morrisville collected another 24 points to add to their already commanding lead in the second quarter, racing out to the 43-19 advantage at the half.
  • The Mustangs outshot Cazenovia nearly 60% to the Wildcats 18% first half effort, capitalizing on visitor miscues while rolling to 24 points off turnovers at the break.
  • Morrisville didn't let off the gas in the third, building up a 67-24 lead, and didn't look back as they rolled to the non-league victory.
  • In all the Mustangs outgained Cazenovia 36-2 in points off turnovers, 16 of which came on the fast break.
  • Lucia Liverio led the Cazenovia efforts with nine total points, adding six rebounds and three assists.
  • In all the hosts shot 46.9% from the floor on opening night, draining 11 from long range, while limiting Cazenovia to a 26% effort.
