Morrisville Knocks Out #1 Penn State Berks in United East Semifinals

READING, Pa. – The Morrisville women's volleyball team outlasted the top seeded Lions from Penn State Berks on Friday night in a back and forth five set affair to advance to the United East Conference Championship.

  • Records: Morrisville 17-11 (4-4 United East), Penn State Berks 17-15 (8-0 United East) 
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • The Mustangs dropped the first set of the best of five contest 25-18.
  • However, Morrisville was able to even the match up at one set a piece with a dominant 25-16 in the second set.
  • Hannah Taylor (Goshen, N.Y.) gave the Mustangs the edge in the back half of the set, taking Morrisville from 12-12 to 16-12.
  • Morrisville fell behind early in the third set and despite putting together some runs, it was too little too late as the #4 seed fell 25-18.
  • With their backs against the wall, Isabella Wallace (Homer, N.Y.) served the Mustangs to a seven point advantage in the early stages of the fourth set.  Morrisville continued to push points throughout the set to take the fourth set victory 25-15.
  • Morrisville jumped out to a commanding 5-0 lead in the decisive fifth set.
  • Penn State Berks clawed their way back, tying the Mustangs 8-8.
  • Big kills by Brianna Gates (Eagle, Colo.) put Morrisville up 11-8, forcing the Lions to take a timeout.
  • The Mustangs held their ground throughout the remainder of the set, closing out the victory 15-12 to take the fifth set and claim the five set victory to advance to the United East Conference championship match.
  • Gates led the way offensively, putting away 19 kills. 
  • Kirsten Florio (Wellsboro, Pa.) and Emily Huppee (Austin, Tex.) also finished with double digit kills at 18 and 12 respectively.
  • In addition to contributing a service ace, Taylor tallied 44 assists.
  • Anna Salamino (Liverpool, N.Y.) picked up 26 digs, while Wallace added 12 and Gates tallied 10.
NEXT UP FOR THE MUSTANGS

Morrisville will return to the court at Penn State Berks to take on the other semi-final winner Gallaudet University tomorrow afternoon at 2 PM.
