Fourth quarter pushes Morrisville women past Oswego in Mustang Classic

Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville women's basketball team netted a big non-conference win Saturday afternoon as they ran away from the visiting Oswego Lakers in the fourth quarter to claim a 77-63 victory on their home court in Morrisville in the final game of the Mustang Classic.

  • Host SUNY Morrisville picked up a big non-conference win Saturday afternoon as they handed visiting SUNY Oswego a 77-63 loss behind a dominating fourth quarter in the final game of the 2021 Mustang Classic in Morrisville.
  • Morrisville outgained the Lakers 23-10 in the final frame, dominating Oswego with play in the paint while capitalizing on turnovers.
  • Three collected double-figures to lead the Mustangs on the afternoon, including Cara Walker (Phelps, N.Y.) who led the way with a game high 22, collecting a double-double as she snagged 10 rebounds.
  • Taylor Colone-Microni (Oneonta, N.Y.) added 15, hitting 5-of-6 from beyond the arc, while dishing out two assists and collecting another two steals.
  • Rachel Vieira (Caruthers, N.Y.) missed a near double-double with a stellar defensive performance, netting 13 points, while collecting six rebounds and registering nine total steals on the day.
  • Morrisville dominated the inside game, outgaining Oswego 42-20 in points in the paint, while collecting another 23 points off Laker miscues.
  • The hosts opened the contest with a 22-14 first quarter lead and maintained their distance through the second to carry a 39-30 lead into the break.
  • Oswego was able to use a 52.94% shooting performance in the third to get back in the contest, after trailing by as many as 13 in the frame.
  • Morrisville's Dezia Becker (Endicott, N.Y.) gave the hosts a 12 point lead with 4:16 to go in the third, but a three by Chastin Giles kicked off an 11-0 run by Oswego to send the game into the final frame with a 54-53 Morrisville lead.
  • Danielle Caivana gave Oswego a one-point lead with her layup early on in the third, and both teams played back-and-forth over the ensuing two minutes, before a layup from Brooke Hammersley (Weedsport, N.Y.) fueled an 11-1 run by the Mustangs to regain an eight point advantage with four minutes to go.
  • Oswego hit a layup with 3:35 to go to make it a six point game, but Mustangs took advantage of the power behind Walker and found the freshmen for back-to-back tallies to regain a double-digit lead.
  • Colone-Microni added a three with under a minute to go to regain the double-digit advantage, and Becker sealed the win with two free throws as Morrisville walked away with a 77-63 victory.
  • Morrisville hit 9-of-15 shots in the final quarter, shooting 60% from the floor, while hitting three from behind the arc.
  • Caivana was named to the All-Tournament team for the Lakers, while Vieira also earned a spot for the Mustangs. Walker was named the tournament MVP.
