Morrisville women power past Hilbert for win

Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Host SUNY Morrisville women's basketball improved to 3-1 overall Friday night as they collected a 63-55 win over visiting Hilbert College during the first round of the Mustang Classic held in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Sophomore guard Rachel Vieira (Caruthers, Calif.) posted a team high 20 points Friday night to lead the host SUNY Morrisville women's basketball team to a 63-55 decision over visiting Hilbert College during the opening round of the Mustang Classic held in Morrisville.
  • Vieira went 7-for-13 on the night and added three steals to her tallies, while teammate Cara Walker (Phelps, N.Y.) collected 12 to go along with her four rebounds and two steals.
  • Delimar Vega-Haley (Worcester, N.Y.) posted nine points while dishing out four assists and collecting three rebounds, while teammate Dezia Becker (Endicott, N.Y.) recorded a team best six assists.
  • Brooke Hammersley (Weedsport, N.Y.) led the Mustangs with eight rebounds on the night.
  • After an early 8-0 run by the Mustangs, Hilbert climbed back into the contest and claimed a two-point lead midway through, but Morrisville responded with a second 8-0 run to close out the quarter and send the game into the second frame with a 18-10 host lead.
  • In the second, Morrisville increased their lead to as many as nine, but once again the Hawks were able to cut the deficit down to single digits and head into the half trailing by two.
  • Keeping pace with the opening half, Morrisville and Hilbert battled back and forth in the third, and the Mustangs carried a five point lead into the final frame, 42-37.
  • Hilbert held a two-point lead over the Mustangs with 6:49 to go in the third, but back-to-back three's by Carli Pardee (South Kortright, N.Y.) and Walker regained a small cushion for the hosts, fueling an 8-0 run to end the quarter.
  • Morrisville led by as many as eight in the final quarter before Hilbert cut the lead down to three with under a minute to go but Walker added a layup on the opposite end to increase the Mustangs lead to five, and the Hawks forced the hosts to earn the win from the free throw line.
  • Vieira closed out the contest hitting 4-of-6 from the charity stripe, securing the victory for Morrisville.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
 
  • Morrisville will host SUNY Oswego in the second day of Mustang Classic action, with a tip scheduled for 3 p.m. in Morrisville. SUNY Poly will tip-off against Hilbert at 1 p.m. in the first of the day's contests.
