Morrisville battles to last point in five set match against Harrisburg

Box Score MIDDLETOWN, PA – The SUNY Morrisville women's volleyball team took the host Penn St. Harrisburg Nittany Lions to five sets in Saturday afternoon's United East regular season finale, and despite battling point-to-point down the stretch, fell 3-2 in the match to the hosts.

THE BASICS:
  • Final Score: Penn St. Harrisburg 3, Morrisville 2 (21-25, 25-14, 25-21, 15-25, 15-13)
  • Location: Capital Union Building, Middletown, Pa.
  • Records: Penn St. Harrisburg 19-9, 6-2 United East; Morrisville 16-11, 4-4 United East
 
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville women's volleyball battled through the fifth set with host Penn State Harrisburg, but fell 3-2 in match action in the United East Conference regular season finale.
  • Morrisville outhit the hosts .156 to .131 as a team, registering a total 54 kills across the match with a team high 18 from outside hitter Brianna Gates (Eagle, Colo.).
  • Gates also added two blocks, an ace and 12 total digs to her totals on the day.
  • Two additional teammates registered double figures in attacks at the net, including senior Kirsten Florio (Wellsboro, Pa.) who collected 15 to go along with eight digs.
  • Emily Huppee (Liberty Hill, Tex.) added another 11, serving up three aces and collecting four total blocks at the net.
  • Hannah Taylor (Goshen, N.Y.) put up a match high 44 assists, also serving three aces and collecting 10 digs defensively, while Isabella Wallace (Homer, N.Y.) added another two assists, recording a team best 15 digs.
  • Morrisville won the opening set 25-21, before Harrisburg battled back and took a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth set.
  • In the fourth, the Mustangs got their offensive game rolling, hitting .348 to cruise to a 25-15 set win, and sending the game into the decisive set.
  • In the fifth, Morrisville trailed 7-4 before battling back to within one, and found themselves again in a three-point deficit before working the bet and getting back-to-back kills from Gates to make it a two-point set.
  • Two additional attacks from Florio tied the set at 10 before Morrisville found an edge with two straight points, including a service ace from Taylor.
  • After taking a 13-12 set lead on the throwdown from Florio, Harrisburg found success with their two outside hitters to claim the 15-13 set win for the match.
