Morrisville men down Cazenovia, advance to NEAC semifinals

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville men's basketball team advanced to the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) semifinal round of the league's championship tournament Tuesday night, taking out third seeded Cazenovia College by a final 100-88 score in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Seven Mustangs posted double figures Tuesday night as the second seeded SUNY Morrisville men's basketball team advanced to the NEAC semifinals held Friday night in Harrisburg with their 100-88 victory over third seeded Cazenovia College.
  • Jon Brennan (Irvington, N.Y.) led the Mustang charge with a near triple double performance, netting a team high 19 points and 12 rebounds, while posting nine assists in the win.
  • Fellow teammates Derek Beames (Otego, N.Y.) and Rahmell Smith (Syracuse, N.Y.) added 16 points apiece and combined for 12 assists, dishing out six each.
  • Kevin Dennis (Bronx, N.Y.) added 14 points to go along with eight rebounds, while Jaylin Montalvo (Hempstead, N.Y.) collected 13 points and snagged eight rebounds.
  • Tyrin Miller (White Plains, N.Y.) and Ishmael Chisholm (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) rounded out the leader board with 11 points each.
  • A majority of the Mustangs game came on the inside, netting 50 total points on the night in the paint, 17 on second chance opportunities.
  • Both teams were evenly matched throughout the contest, but it was the Mustangs who were able to utilize a 12-4 run to close out the opening half en route to a 45-34 break lead, a margin that proved to be the difference late in the second period over Cazenovia.
  • Cazenovia cut the single digit deficit to three with just under three minutes to play in the first half, but the Mustangs took off over the final minutes of action to open the lead to 11.
  • In the second, Morrisville increased their lead to as many as 15, before Cazenovia cut the deficit to nine, but that's as close as they would get as the hosts and defending champions went on a 10-0 streak to open the margin to 19, their largest lead of the contest.

  • Morrisville will head to top seeded Penn St. Harrisburg on Friday, tipping off against the regular season champions at 8 p.m. in Harrisburg in the second semifinal contest. Additional details surrounding the tournament will be announced once made available.
