Vieira nets 33 in win over Clarkson as Morrisville women out gain Knights 72-64

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Freshman guard Rachel Vieira (Caruthers, Calif.) posted a collegiate high 33 points Tuesday afternoon for the host SUNY Morrisville women's basketball team, as they avenged an early season loss to non-conference opponent Clarkson University by a 72-64 final on the Mustangs home court in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Morrisville freshman guard, Rachel Vieira (Caruthers, Calif.) led all scorers Tuesday afternoon as she posted a collegiate high 33 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the floor in a 72-64 victory for the Mustangs over visiting Clarkson University.
  • Vieira, who had eight total in the opening half of play, came alive offensively in the second and rattled off 25 in the second half, adding a game total four rebounds, three assists and four steals to her tallies come game end.
  • Senior Tori Rockefeller (South Kortright, N.Y.) added 19, snagging four rebounds, while fellow teammate Taylor Colone-Microni (Oneonta, N.Y.) chipped in seven.
  • Miranda Wright (Smyrna, N.Y.) led the Mustangs on the glass with 11 boards, four offensive rebounds.
  • Three posted double digits for Clarkson, including Hannah Earl who led the way with 16 points, collecting a double-double with 16 rebounds.
  • Rachel Marion had 15, followed by Maddie Pratt with 14 to lead the Golden Knight scorers.
  • Clarkson led 29-28 at the break before both teams battled back and fourth throughout the third quarter of action.
  • The Golden Knights, though, held a four-point advantage heading into the final frame, 46-42.
  • Morrisville opened the fourth with an 8-0 run, regaining the four-point lead as Rockefeller and Vieira each buried the long ball from the right wing, but a persistent Clarkson team stayed within striking distance, regaining a five-point advantage with just over three minutes remaining in the contest.
  • Clarkson held a two-point lead with just over two to go until a three by Colone-Microni along the baseline gave the Mustangs the one-point advantage.
  • Vieira added a layup with 42 seconds to go to extend the lead to three, before Rockefeller and Vieira each closed out the contest for the Mustangs from the free throw line to avenge the earlier season loss to the Knights.
  • Morrisville finished 9-fror-11 from the free throw line and drained nine from beyond the arc, five off the hot shooting hand of Vieira.
  • Clarkson, who held the 51-29 advantage in rebounds and 22-7 lead on the offensive glass, was outgained by the Mustangs in points off turnovers as the hosts capitalized on 30 visitor miscues, collecting 37 points.
  • Morrisville also outgained the Golden Knights 30-18 in the final quarter of action behind their 60% shooting effort from the floor.

  • Morrisville will return to the court on Saturday, January 11th, resuming North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play on the road at Penn St. Berks. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Reading, Pennsylvania.
