Bears Hand Tough 2-1 Loss to Mustangs in NEWHL Action

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Mustangs dropped a tough Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) contest 2-1 against the visiting Bears from SUNY Potsdam on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: SUNY Potsdam 2, Morrisville 1 (by period:  SUNY Potsdam 0-1-1, Morrisville 0-0-1
  • Location:  Morrisville, N.Y.
  • Records:  SUNY Potsdam 7-8-0 (5-5-0 NEWHL), Morrisville 7-7-1 (4-4-1 NEWHL)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • The Mustangs weathered an early Potsdam penalty, and held the Bears to 8 shots on goal through the first twenty minutes of action.
  • Morrisville themselves put 8 shots on goal in the first, but were also denied the back of the net.
  • In fact, the game remained scoreless through the first ten minutes of the second period.  A SUNY Potsdam power play goal changed that at the 10:05 mark in the second.
  • Despite the setback, the Mustangs quickly earned a power play opportunity of their own.  Unfortunately, the home squad was unable to find the equalizer.
  • The Bears would eventually earn a 2-0 lead at the 6:30 mark in the third period as they capitalized on another power play goal.
  • The Mustangs had more chances late, earning their third power play of the game with four minutes left.  However, the penalty kill unit of the Bears and goal tender Alexa Pfeiffer, kept Morrisville off the board despite facing 13 power play shots on goal.
  • Looking for a spark, Morrisville pulled their goalie with 1:29 left.  Alana McDonald (Potsdam, N.Y.) found the back of the net with two seconds remaining in the contest of off assists from Maddison Devlin (Campbell River, B.C.) and Mackenzie Lombardi (Hamilton, Ont.).
WHAT'S NEXT
