Women explode in opening half, run wild in win over Wells

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville women's basketball team came out of the gates ready to run, and quickly set the tone as they put together an explosive 59-point opening half en route to their fourth straight victory Wednesday night in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • From the opening whistle, the Morrisville women's basketball team set the tone as they posted a season best opening half performance, dominating visiting Wells College with a 59-point opening half.
  • The Mustangs nearly matched their per game total in the first 20, shooting 62.5% alone in the second quarter, while burying a first half total 15 three's.
  • The all-around team effort saw all Mustangs contribute to the win, including 43 points that came from their bench.
  • Rachel Vieira (Caruthers, Calif.) posted 16 points in the win, appearing for a mere 21 minutes, while shooting lights out with a 4-for-5 effort from beyond the arc. She also added five steals and two assists to the win.
  • Angel Gonzalez (Cimarron, N.M.) had the hot hand from long range, draining four of her six attempts from behind the three-point line for a total 12 points, adding four rebounds to her collection, while fellow guard Alexis Campbell (Buffalo, N.Y.) added 12 as well in just seven minutes of play.
  • Campbell was 2-for-2 from the floor and 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
  • Anna Raymond (Newark, N.Y.) chipped in 11, dishing out two assists and collecting three steals, while fellow guard/forward Brooke Hammersley (Weedsport, N.Y.) posted a season high five steals.
  • Morrisville forced 33 Wells turnovers, adding 43 points off miscues to their totals on the day.
  • They finished with a game total 19 three's, and a 49.1% shooting effort.
  • Jordan Jacobs carried the Express with her 17-point effort, also adding a team high six rebounds, two blocks and two assists to the Wells totals.
  • Morrisville opened with a 32-9 lead after the opening quarter, holding Wells scoreless for nearly five minutes before out gaining the Express 27-3 in the second.

  • Morrisville will return to the court on Saturday, traveling to SUNY Polytechnic for the cross town match against the Wildcats. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Marcy.
