Morrisville makes statement in season opener, hands Bridgewater State 39-7 defeat

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – It was a grueling three weeks of preseason training for the Morrisville Mustangs leading up to the season opener Saturday at Bridgewater State, and all efforts paid off as the visitors walked away with a 39-7 victory on the road in Bridgewater, Massachusetts.

THE BASICS:

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Both teams played to a scoreless opening quarter before an explosive second quarter led to a 19-0 Morrisville State lead at the break.
  • After another touchdown score in the third, Morrisville State added to their lead in the final quarter, scoring twice, to capture the 39-7 win.
  • The Mustangs outgained Bridgewater St. 171 to 68 in the running game, accumulating a total 361 yards offense in the season opener, as the defensive unit held the hosts to 268 total offense on the afternoon.
  • Kinsey Williams (Rome, N.Y.) and Mike Cirasuolo (Marcy, N.Y.) combined for 143 yards on the ground, scoring twice, while junior quarterback Bill Flatow (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) contributed another 190-yards offense in the passing game.
  • Flatow connected on 15-of-25 attempts for two scores, and added 12 net yards rushing for a score as well.
  • Three served as main targets in the receiving game for the Mustangs, including Toure' Hall Jr. (Stratford, Conn.) who pulled in six for 48 yards and two scores.
  • Jermaine Cooper (New York, N.Y.) and Kyle Tuohy (Amaranth, Ont.) added a combined five receptions for another 90 yards.
  • Ernesto Mitchell (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) led the defensive unit with eight total stops, registering a sack for a loss of five yards.
  • Deondrade Wells (Goshen, N.Y.) contributed seven tackles to the defensive game, also breaking up a pass and intercepting one that was returned for a touchdown score.
  • Late in the first quarter Bridgewater was threatening to score, driving down to the Mustangs 20-yard line, but the 37-yard field goal attempt was blocked keeping the hosts off the board.
  • Morrisville State gained possession on their own 20-yard line and within nine plays made their way into the end zone for their first strike of the afternoon, a three-yard run by Kinsey up the middle. Max Falkner (Liverpool, N.Y.) completed the scoring drive with the point after.
  • On Bridgewater's first possession of the ensuing drive, the hosts running back dropped the ball and it was recovered by linebacker Joe Miller-LaBar (Groton, N.Y.), setting up the Mustangs second strike a mere 1:29 after their first touchdown of the day.
  • Flatow connected with Hall on the eight-yard scoring pass play, extending the Mustangs lead to 13-0.
  • Morrisville had one last scoring drive before the halftime period, as Flatow hit Hall for a second time, a nine-yard throwing score to complete the seven play, 47-yard drive.
  • Bridgewater was able to put numbers on the board in the third quarter, capitalizing off a Mustang fumble, but two drives later, Morrisville State regained their 19-point lead as Flatow dove over the goal line for a two-yard rushing score and 26-7 visitor lead.
  • Bridgewater was able to hold the Mustangs after another offensive threat, taking over possession on their own 11-yard line early on in the final frame. After three straight pass completions by the hosts, Wells stepped in front of the pass attempt for the interception and scrambled 49 yards for the defensive score, widening the gap to 33-7.
  • Cirasuolo got a taste of the scoring action late in the fourth, capping off the 63-yard Mustang drive with a seven-yard scurry for the score with 1:25 to go.
  • Bridgewater made one last attempt to put together their offensive game, but the Mustangs defensive unit stood strong and allowed just 18 visitor yards in the final minute of action.
  • Morrisville State controlled the game from the get-go, maintaining possession for nearly 31 minutes of play, while converting 5-of-6 red zone opportunities.
  • The defensive unit collected a total five sacks for a loss of 22 yards, while registering two total interceptions (a second from Sage Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in the hosts end zone to prevent a score).

  • Morrisville State open the home schedule next Saturday, taking on Hobart College for a non-league bout on Drake Field in Morrisville. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
