Morrisville State unable to stop Saint air raid in 32-22 loss

CANTON, N.Y. – Host St. Lawrence University took to the air in the Friday night battle in Canton, recording 390 yards in the passing game, as they defeated visiting Morrisville State 32-22 in non-conference action in Canton.

THE BASICS:
  • Final Score: St. Lawrence 32, Morrisville 22 (halftime: SLU 19-7)
  • Location: Leckonby Stadium, Canton, N.Y.
  • Records: St. Lawrence 1-2, Morrisville 1-2

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host St. Lawrence University posted an air raid against visiting Morrisville State football Friday night, accumulating 390 yards in the passing game as they defeated the Mustangs 32-22 in non-conference action.
  • The Saints were limited to just 19 yards net rushing against the Mustang defense, but Morrisville State struggled to find an answer as quarterback Tyler Grochot launched 55 total passes throughout the contest, connecting on 31 for four touchdown scores and 390 yards.
  • The Mustangs registered more than 300- yards total offense themselves, 118 coming in the running game behind 111-yards of power running from senior running back Kinsey Williams (Rome, N.Y.).
  • Bill Flatow (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) completed 19-of-31 passes for 183 total yards and two touchdown scores to assist in the offensive efforts, seven of those going to Toure' Hall Jr. (Stratford, Conn.) for 60-yards.
  • Joseph Viscardo served as the main target for SLU's Grochot, pulling in 11 receptions for 134 total yards and all four touchdown scores. Bryan Dempsey added another 92 yards behind his eight catches.
  • Defensively, the Mustangs had an 11 tackle game for Philemon Benjamin Jr. (Queens, N.Y.), who had six solo stops in the contest, while getting another eight tackles apiece from Joe Miller-Labar (Groton, N.Y.), Marc Eberley (Marcy, N.Y.) and Jermaine Rankine (Newburgh, N.Y.).
  • Morrisville State came out of the gates with a 73-yard scoring drive fueled by big gains from Kinsey, and capped off with a 9-yard scoring pass to Jermaine Cooper (New York, N.Y.) just 4:35 into the quarter.
  • The defensive unit was able to stop a persistent Saint offense and limit them to a 22 –yard field goal to send the game into the second quarter with a 7-3 visitor lead.
  • The hosts, though, turned the tables in the second and posted 16 unanswered points, forcing the Mustangs to turn the ball over before the end of the first, and adding a 27-yard field goal early on in the second.
  • Grochot found his rhythm after, hitting his wide receiving unit for three big gains, including a 12-yard strike to Viscardo for the go ahead score midway through the quarter.
  • After forcing a quick three-and-out, the Saints added to their lead with 3:26 showing on the clock, Viscardo collecting the 18-yard scoring pass for the 19-7 St. Lawrence lead.
  • Midway through the third quarter, Morrisville State took advantage of a 30-yard scramble by Kinsey that brought the ball down to the SLU 16-yard line, and brought the game within one possession as Flatow got a block to the right and collected the two-yard rushing tally to make it a 19-14 ball game.
  • That was short-lived though, as Grochot again found his lead receiver to extend the lead back to an 11-point margin seconds before the fourth quarter.
  • Back-to-back strikes for Flatow early on in the fourth found the Mustangs threatening to score, and they capitalized with a 13-yard strike to tight end Kyle Tuohy (Amaranth, ONT) early on, adding the two-point conversion to make it a 22-25 ball game.
  • But much like the tone of the rest of the game, St. Lawrence had a response and Grochot connected with Viscardo for a fourth time on the ensuing drive, regaining the two-possession lead for the eventual win.

WHAT'S NEXT:
  • Morrisville State will return to Drake Field on Saturday, hosting Husson University in a noon kick-off on Mustang Weekend.
