Mustangs Outlast Red Dragons 5-3 in Roller Coaster SUNYAC Match Up

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Mustangs rebounded from last night's loss to split the State Universities of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) series with SUNY Cortland, taking the second game 5-3 in a roller coaster affair.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: Morrisville 5, SUNY Cortland 3 (By period:  Morrisville 1-2-2, SUNY Cortland 0-1-2)
  • Location: Cortland, N.Y.
  • Records: Morrisville 4-3-0, 4-2-0 SUNYAC), Cortland (3-6-0, 2-5-0 SUNYAC)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Jestin Somero (New Ipswich, N.H.) got the scoring started early for the Mustangs, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead just 1:36 into the contest.  Nick DeVito (Averill Park, N.Y.) and Aidan Conolly (Rochester, N.Y.) picked up assists.
  • The Mustangs offense went quiet for the rest of the first, but Morrisville was also able to hold the Red Dragons scoreless as Jared Young (Pueblo West, Colo.) picked up 13 of his 36 save in the first period.
  • Morrisville went back to work in the second, extending their lead to 3-0 by capitalizing on two power play opportunities.
  • DeVito put the Mustangs up 2-0 at the 4:51 mark with assists from Somero and James Boisvert (Mansfield, Tx.).  Just over ten minutes later, Somero collected his second goal of the game to give Morrisville the 3-0 advantage.
  • However, the Red Dragons began to turn the tides at the end of the second period as they capitalized on a power play opportunity of their own with two minutes remaining in the period.
  • SUNY Cortland continued their push in the third period, picking up goals at the 0:15 mark and the 5:47 mark to knot the contest up at 3-3.
  • The tie would be short lived thanks to Ben Sprague (Norfolk, N.Y.) who broke free for an unassisted strike while the Mustangs were short-handed to put Morrisville up 4-3.
  • Ryan Bochert (Denver, Colo.) sealed the deal with the Mustangs' third power play goal of the contest with twenty seconds remaining to secure the 5-3 victory.
