WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Morrisville State men's hockey has opened the 2019 slate with back-to-back wins in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action, completing the weekend sweep of league opponent Fredonia with a 4-3 final victory.
  • After playing to a scoreless first period, Morrisville senior forward Nick DeVito (Averill Park, N.Y.) fired home the opening score of the contest just 1:14 into the second, giving the Mustangs the early 1-0 lead.
  • Just over five minutes later, Fredonia took advantage of the power play opportunity and evened the score at one, netting the extra man tally off the stick of Malcolm Arseneau.
  • Playing to a back-and-forth battle, Morrisville regained the lead at 16:52 with R. Austin Johnson (Pawling, N.Y.) one-timing the feed from Jestin Somero (New Ipswich, N.H.), but again Fredonia would respond on a second power play of the period.
  • Charlie Manley was able to sneak the puck past Morrisville netminder Jared Young (Pueblo West, Colo.), sending the game into the final frame knotted at two.
  • Freshman Jesse Edwards (Rochester, N.Y.) collected his first collegiate score at the 12:09 mark of the third period, regaining the lead for the visitors, but once again the Blue Devils line that includes Arseneau evened it up at three less than a minute later.
  • In a quick turn of momentum, Morrisville got a breakaway and DeVito buried his second of the night at 13:40, giving the Mustangs the edge and eventual win.
  • Fredonia put a persistent attack on net, but the Mustangs defensive unit kept the Blue Devils cold, as they blocked two and Young turned away another five to secure the win.
  • Young finished with 40 stops for the Mustangs in the conference win, 15 of which came in the final period of action.

WHAT'S NEXT:
  • Morrisville returns to the ice next Friday, traveling to SUNY Brockport. The Golden Eagles opened play with wins over Plattsburgh and Potsdam.
