Mustangs Drop Season Opener at SUNY Potsdam 2-1

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The 2019-2020 edition of Morrisville Women's Ice Hockey took to the ice on Friday afternoon, not just for their season debut but also for their North East Women's Hockey League debut on the road at SUNY Potsdam.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: Morrisville 1, SUNY Potsdam 2
  • Location: Potsdam, N.Y.
  • Records: Morrisville (0-1-0, 0-1-0 NEWHL), SUNY Potsdam (1-0-0, 1-0-0 NEWHL)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Neither the Mustangs nor the Bears could get on the board in the first period though both squads had chances on power plays.
  • The Bears outshot the Mustangs 10-5 in the first period mostly due to the 2-1 power play advantage in favor of Potsdam.
  • Morrisville was able to draw a SUNY Potsdam interference penalty at the 6:26 mark in the second period and the Mustangs wasted no time in turning the one skater advantage into a goal.
  • Mackenzie Lombardi (Hamilton, Ont.) was able to notch the goal nine seconds later, putting away the rebound from Chyne Kennedy's (Southwold, Ont.) initial shot from the point.  Kennedy picked up the first assist on the play, while Maddison Devlin (Campbell River, B.C.) was credited with the second assist.
  • Unfortunately, the advantage was short lived as the Bears rattled off two goals in less than thirty seconds beginning two minutes after the Mustangs' initial tally.
  • Morrisville worked to even the score throughout the third period, peppering the Bears' goaltender with 16 shots on goal, but all were denied as the Mustangs were forced to settle for the 2-1 loss.
  • Sissy Harman (Eden, N.Y.) suffered the loss between the pipes for Morrisville despite recording 21 saves in her first collegiate action.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Mustangs will make their home debut on Saturday afternoon at 2 PM as they host their former Colonial Hockey Conference foe and fellow rookie member of the NEWHL, SUNY Canton.
