Early Lead Not Enough as Bears Claw Their Way Back to Defeat Morrisville 6-5 on Late 3rd Period Goal

Box Score

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Men's Ice Hockey team saw an early lead disappear down the stretch as they lost a SUNYAC match up at Potsdam 6-5 on Saturday night.

The Mustangs shot out to a quick 3-0 start in the first period, forcing the Bears to switch goalies, just over 5 minutes into the game.  Stevie Ray Adams (Akwesasne, Quebec) found the back of the net just over two minutes into the action for the 1-0 lead.  Nick DeVito (Averill Park, N.Y.) and John Lauer (Syracuse, N.Y.) garnered the assists.

Ian Wood (Pittsburgh, Pa.) notched Morrisville's second goal of the game and his second on the season, just over two minutes later.  Mason Corliss (Katy, Tx.) and David Landau (Newtown, Conn.) were credited with the assists.

Sixteen seconds later, Morrisville extended the lead to 3-0 when Stevie Ray Adams struck again for the unassisted tally.

Potsdam put themselves on the board just over halfway through the first period with an unassisted goal of their own, but the Mustangs tacked on another with 5:08 remaining in the period on a Dane Moore (Cadillac, Mich.) goal, his first of the season.  Junior Layne Martin (Findlay, Ohio) picked up the assist.

Up 4-1 heading into the second period, the Bears turned it up a notch, out shooting the Mustangs 24-8.  However, CJ Stubbs (Pleasant Grove, Vt.) extended to lead to 5-1 on a power play goal at 10:48.  Joseph Santino (Woodbridge, Ontario) and Stevie Ray Adams assisted on the goal.

Unfortunately for the visitors, Potsdam returned the favor, scoring two power play goals of their own.  The first was scored at 12:18 and the second at 15:17, bringing the score to 5-3 in favor of Morrisville by the end of the 2nd period.

The Potsdam Bears continued their comeback against the Mustangs quickly in the third period, posting an unassisted short-handed goal one minute and twenty four seconds in, cutting the Morrisville lead to just one goal at 5-4.

Morrisville held firm to their lead, but an even handed goal at the 12:18 mark, knotted the score at 5 goals apiece.

It looked as though the game would be a repeat of last night's overtime contest at Morrisville, but the Bears avoided the extra time by netting the game winner with just 21 seconds remaining in the third period for the 6-5 win.

With the win, Potsdam improved to 2-0-2, while Morrisville State fell to 0-3-1.

The Mustangs will resume their SUNYAC schedule on Friday, November 11 at 7 PM at Brockport, before returning home on Saturday, November 12 at 7 PM for the second part of that conference series.
