Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College women's soccer team made it six straight victories Wednesday night, topping Route 20 rival Cazenovia College 2-0 on Drake Field in Morrisville.
The win lifts the Mustangs to a 6-2 overall record, and keeps them perfect in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play with a 5-0 conference record. Cazenovia falls to 5-4 overall, dropping to 4-1 in conference action.
In a physical and heated match playing for cross-town bragging rights, Morrisville State made a quick offensive attack, but were held scoreless as more than five open shots sailed wide of the net.
Morrisville State finally got on the board at 31:59, as Cassandra Premo (Taberg, N.Y.) crossed the ball to the left and found the foot of Bailey Rutan (Cincinnatus, N.Y.) who rifled the shot from the top of the box past Cazenovia keeper Breanne Warner (Lacona, N.Y.) for the 1-0 Mustang lead.
For most of the night, Cazenovia had no response to the speed of forwards Rutan and Krista Baxter (Downsville, N.Y) and had difficulty containing their offensive attack.
In the 61st minute, Jordan Nadeau (Cobleskill, N.Y.) headed the ball off a throw-in over to Rutan, who with one quick step, got past her defender and chipped the 30-yard shot towards the goal. The shot took one bounce high over the head of Warner and deflected off her finger tips into the back of the net for the two goal Mustang lead.
Cazenovia made several attempts to equalize the scoring, but Angela Marriott (Peekskill, N.Y.) turned away a game total seven to secure the shut out conference victory for Morrisville State.
The Mustangs return to the field Sunday, traveling to Fisher College for a non-conference contest.
