Matthew Grawrock was appointed the Director of Athletics at SUNY Morrisville in September 2021, becoming the second to assume the role for the Mustangs in the departments NCAA Division III history.
Grawrock comes to Morrisville from NCAA Division II Eastern New Mexico University where he served as the Associate Athletic Director for Compliance and Internal Operations since June 2018. For a short stint, he assumed the role of Interim Director of Athletics for the Greyhounds.
During his time at ENMU Grawrock led all internal operations and staff, serving as the direct report for athletic training and intercollegiate facilities, assisting coaches with budgeting and purchasing, while also having sport oversight of soccer, baseball and softball. Grawrock also played a key role in scheduling, contract management and team travel, as well as the overall game-day experience with oversight of event staff, the fan experience and event management.
Serving as the primary point of contact for NCAA initiatives and programming, Grawrock facilitated the education of the campus and community with policies and regulations relative to maintaining compliance with NCAA, conference and institutional guidelines.
In addition to serving as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Advisor for ENMU, Grawrock was also a member of the NAAC Division II Committee.
His involvement on campus included serving as an athletics representative on the President’s Advisory Committee in addition to his role as the vice chair of the campus’ Compliance Committee. His was also a member on ENMU’s Behavior Intervention Team as well as the Athletics Hall of Honors committee.
Prior to his stint at ENMU, Grawrock served as Assistant Athletic Director for eight years at Southern Virginia University, where he assisted with spearheading the institution’s transition as a member of the NAIA to membership within the NCAA, Division III, in addition to several other roles within the athletics program.
In his position as a senior staff member of the department, Grawrock shaped the compliance area for the institution, and implemented several compliance policies and regulations; including strategies that assisted in establishing eligibility standards for student-athletes at SVU and the overall department’s day-to-day operations.
Grawrock also directed the athletic-academic program for the department to improve overall academic performance by student-athletes, in addition to serving as the game-day administrator for assigned events.
While at Southern Virginia, Grawrock was an active participant in the NCAA Effective Facilitator Workshop and served as a facilitator for the NCAA’s “Gameday the DIII Way” program.
Grawrock held the lead coaching role of the women’s soccer program from 2007 through the 2016 season, becoming Southern Virginia’s longest tenured coach for a women’s program while recording the most wins in the sports history at the institution.
Throughout his nine seasons at the helm, Grawrock’s squad held the highest GPA and earned several academic accolades, both individually and collectively as a program.
In addition to his coaching experience on the pitch, Grawrock led all fundraising efforts for the soccer program, maintained oversight over budgeting and purchasing, as well as assisted with sports information efforts as director.
Grawrock worked as the recreation coordinator at Tahoe City Public Utilities District Parks & Recreation in Tahoe City, California prior to his arrival at Southern Virginia, where he oversaw the district’s L.E.A.R.N. after-school program and served as director for Camp Skylandia, a summer day camp experience for area residents.
Earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in liberal arts from Southern Virginia in 2002, Grawrock was a member of the Knights men’s soccer team that placed sixth at the NSCAA National Tournament. He went on to earn his Master of Science degree in sports management / sport coaching from the United States Sports Academy in 2011.
Grawrock and his family are actively involved within the sports community, as his wife, Duste, continues to be involved in softball at the high school and collegiate level – having served as a head coach at Southern Virginia and interim coach at ENMU. Together, they have five children: Landon (17), Cael (15), Ainsley (12), Rylan (9) and Halsey (3).
