Head women’s lacrosse coach, Taryn Burkholder, announced the addition of Kathryn Shamel as assistant coach for the 2019 season during the fall, and will have the former Muskingum University goalkeeper oversee the defensive unit along with the keepers for the upcoming season.

Aside from her duties on the field, Shamel will also be assisting in recruiting and coordinating the team’s academic efforts.

Shamel, who played for Burkholder for two seasons at Muskingum, came to SUNY Morrisville following graduation in May from the University.

“I am pleased to have Kate join our coaching staff,” Burkholder said.

“I had the pleasure of coaching her for two years, she is a hard worker and her passion for the game will have a big impact for our team, and I’m excited to see what she will bring to our team!”

During her four-year career with the Muskies, she finished second twice in saves within the Ohio Athletic Conference, and earned a slot on the USA Athletes International team that completed in Berlin and Prague during the summer of 2017.

The starting keeper guided the USA team second place in the championship game of the Berlin Open against the Czech National Team, and again in the Prague Cup against the same team.

While at Muskingum, Shamel was actively involved in the Athletic Training Club, serving as vice president; was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, serving as secretary for two years, and was a member of the Chi Alpha Nu Sorority that concentrated on community service.

The athletic training major had volunteer opportunities with the Columbus Marathon and Ohio Athletic Conference Championships and Tournaments in softball and track and field.

She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in athletic training in May 2018, dual majoring with a bachelor’s of health and fitness.

A native of Tuscarawas, Ohio, Shamel is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and is also pursuing her certification as a strength and conditioning coach.
