SUNY Morrisville Student-Athlete Code of Conduct

As a member of an athletic team, you represent the athletic department and SUNY Morrisville.  All team members will conduct themselves in a respectful manner at all times, on and off campus.
Student-athletes, by virtue of increased visibility and recognition on campus, have increased responsibilities in terms of their conduct on and off campus. Just like the actions of administrators and coaches, the actions and conduct of athletes not only reflect upon themselves, but on the team, the Department, and the entire University. As such student-athletes are expected to abide by all rules and regulations as set forth by the University. The same disciplinary actions and procedures will be followed as would be expected with any student on campus with a violation. This is a great responsibility and one that should be taken seriously.

A student-athlete in a SUNY Morrisville uniform is representing the university and should always reflect a positive image. Students of the SUNY Morrisville community are expected to abide by all local, State and Federal laws. A student-athlete that is found in violation of the Athletic Department Code of Conduct may face disciplinary actions consistent with those outlined in the institution’s Student Handbook, Article V, Student Code of Conduct.

Student Code of Conduct
All students affirm to abide by the Student Code of Conduct at SUNY Morrisville. This is done at the start of each semester on their Web for Students Account, through the Information/Affirmation acknowledgement. Any time a student athlete is charged with a Category III violation of the Student Code of Conduct it will be treated seriously by the Athletic Department. Immediate Administrative Suspension from the team is a possibility as well as other disciplinary action until the matter in question is resolved.

Criminal Conduct
Any time a student-athlete is arrested it will be treated seriously by the Athletic Department.  Immediate suspension from the team is a possibility as well as other disciplinary action until all legal aspects of the matter in question have been resolved.

Ethical Conduct
It is expected that all student-athletes will conduct themselves in an ethical manner at all times.  As stated in the NCAA manual in Bylaw 10, unethical conduct includes fraudulence in connection with entrance or placement, engaging in athletic competition under an assumed name, dishonesty in evading or violating NCAA regulations, or knowingly furnishing SUNY Morrisville or the NCAA with false information. This is inclusive of gambling activities consistent with violations outlined in Bylaw 10.3.

Sportsmanship
As a member of a SUNY Morrisville intercollegiate athletic team you are expected to exhibit outstanding sportsmanship and encourage teammates to do likewise.
Student-athletes should display good sportsmanship in all competitions and practices.

Sportsmanship should be displayed to all opponents and their coaches, as well as to the officials. Respect is the most important characteristic a competing student-athlete should possess.
To be specific, the following actions would be considered unsportsmanlike conduct, and are subject to disciplinary action:
  1. Taunting an opponent, spectator, or official
  2. Excessive celebration – It’s not about YOU.  It’s about YOUR TEAM.
  3. Blatant disregard for the safety and well-being of an opponent.
  4. Disrespectful behavior related to the outcome of a contest.  Win or loss you will conduct yourself with humility and respect for your opponent.

As a spectator, student-athletes are expected to demonstrate the highest level of sportsmanship at all athletic events whether hosted by SUNY Morrisville or another location away from the Morrisville campus.  As such, we urge that while you cheer on any Morrisville team, your choice of expression should reflect positive and respectful comments, and void of any profanity or offensive remarks.  Your support is needed to create a positive environment for competition.
