Mustangs Outlast Plattsburgh in High Scoring Affair

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Mustangs hosted Plattsburgh State Friday afternoon, where their dominant offensive showing ultimately led to a 21-14 win over the Cardinals.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Morrisville and Plattsburgh traded early opportunities before Mary Trowbridge (Brookhaven, N.Y.) tied the game on a free-position goal, sparking momentum for the Mustangs.
  • Behind a dominant stretch from Anyssia Ingersoll (Mexico, N.Y.), who netted four straight goals, Morrisville built a 6-2 lead before Plattsburgh responded late with two more to close the gap to 6-4 at the end of the first.
  • The Cardinals opened the second quarter with a run to briefly take the lead, but Morrisville answered behind Ingersoll and Deli Vega-Haley (Worcester, N.Y.) to regain momentum.
  • The Mustangs closed the half strong, highlighted by a man-up finish from Trowbridge, taking a 12-8 advantage into the break.
  • Plattsburgh began the third able to cut into the lead early, but Morrisville responded with timely offense including goals from Ingersoll and Vega-Haley to extend their lead to 15-10 heading into the final quarter.
  • Morrisville pulled away in the final frame, using balanced scoring from Samantha Budney (Pine Bush, N.Y.), Vega-Haley, and Trowbridge to build separation.
  • A late scoring surge sealed a 21-14 victory for the Mustangs.
  • Ingersoll led the contest with eight goals followed by Vega-Haley who contributed five goals and one assist.
  • Budney and Trowbridge each tallied four goals a piece to round out the scoring.
  • The Mustang defense was guided by Ingersoll who recorded nine ground balls and five caused turnovers, while also winning 15 draws.
  • Goalkeeper Aniyah Smith (Grovetown, Ga.) saved five shots in the win.
  • The Cardinals were led by Ellie Macdonald with four goals, while five others netted at least one score.
  • In goal, Aimee Lieman recorded two saves in 30 minutes of action.
