Morrisville football stood up by #24 Cortland in E8 opener

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville football team opened Empire 8 action Saturday against the #24 ranked Cortland Red Dragons, dropping the league battle by a 48-3 final score.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville football opened their 2025 Empire 8 league schedule Saturday against #24 ranked SUNY Cortland, dropping the 48-3 conference decision on Drake Field in Morrisville.
  • Morrisville, who struggled to move the ball offensively, held Cortland to just one score in the first quarter of action, before the Red Dragons opened the gap in the second tacking on two additional touchdowns and two field goals to claim the 27-0 lead at the break.
  • Cortland added two more scores to their totals in the third before Morrisville capitalized on a defensive turnover early in the fourth to put numbers on the board.
  • After a blocked field goal attempt, Cortland's Mike Rescigno attempted to hit a receiver over middle, but the ball was tipped up by Elijah Joyner (Jamaica, N.Y.) and Seth Hunter (Walton, N.Y.) snagged it out of the air, scrambling down to the Cortland 12 yard line.
  • Morrisville's Ryan Fish (Ithaca, N.Y.) sent the 23-yard field goal through the uprights to get the hosts on the board and prevent the shut out.
  • Cortland would later add one final score, completing the 48-3 victory to improve to 2-0 in the Empire 8.
  • Rescigno completed eight passes for 89 yards and four touchdown scores, adding 141 net yards rushing on 13 attempts to lead the ground game.
  • Isaac Sylvain (Schenectady, N.Y.) collected 52 net yards rushing and Jalyn Jacques (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) added another 34 yards for Morrisville in the running game.
  • Dillon English (Webster, N.Y.) led the defensive efforts with nine total stops, while DeSean Bruce (Geneva, N.Y.) added eight.
  • Scotty Howard (Binghamton, N.Y.) added seven, including a tackle for a loss of two yards.
  • Cortland limited Morrisville to just 95 yards total offense on the day as Gavin Guers led the way with seven total tackles, including a sack.
  • Aden Wiser had four stops, three sacks for a loss of 22 yards.

  • Morrisville will begin a two-week travel stretch, heading to Alfred State on Saturday, before meeting Utica on Oct. 11.
