Offense stalls in Mustang Weekend loss to Moravian

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Host SUNY Morrisville football struggled to get their offense moving Saturday afternoon, dropping the Mustang Weekend (homecoming) contest to visiting Moravian University by a 14-6 final score in Morrisville in non-league action.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting Moravian University football held host SUNY Morrisville to 111-yards total offense on the day, as they handed the host Mustangs a 14-6 loss on Drake Field in Morrisville on Mustang Weekend.
  • Morrisville, who collected 45 net yards rushing and 66 more through the air, struggled to move the ball as the Moravian defense limited the hosts to an average 2.2 yards per play on the afternoon.
  • Senior quarterback Alek Britten (Schenectady, N.Y.) collected 66 -yards passing on 7-of-22 completions, connecting with Connor Marriott (Waterville, N.Y.) twice for 30-yards.
  • Alex McBurnie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Isaac Sylvain (Schenectady, N.Y.) each had 25 yards on a combined 17 carries.
  • Morrisville's lone touchdown of the game came from the defensive side of the ball.
  • Forcing a game total four fumbles, senior defensive back Anai Brake (Carteret, N.J.) recovered one of three, returning the ball five yards for the touchdown score in the third quarter.
  • Jared Jenkins put together a 269-yard passing game for the Greyhounds, completing 26-of-41 passes, hitting Avery Koser a total five times for 83-yards and a score.
  • Joey Richmond added to the visitors' offensive totals with 33-net yards rushing on nine carries.
  • Chris Cacace collected nine tackles for Moravian to lead the defensive unit, while teammate Malachi McNeil-Harrison added six, also registering a sack for a loss of nine yards.
  • Evan Salvaggio (Geneseo, N.Y.) led Morrisville with 12 total stops, adding a forced fumble and fumble recovery in the defensive efforts.
  • Omar Jarvis (Rochester, N.Y.) added nine tackles alongside Shane Cook (Binghamton, N.Y.) who also recorded a forced fumble.
  • Moravian scored on their first drive of the contest, completing an eight-play, 67-yard drive with a six-yard Isiah Rico run up center for the early 7-0 lead at 12:56 of the first.
  • Morrisville utilized Moravian penalties to move the ball on their first drive of the contest, reaching as close as the Moravian 21-yard line, where the 38-yard field goal attempt sailed just right of the goalpost midway through the quarter.
  • Moravian's second touchdown came early in the second, completing the drive that began at the end of the first quarter with a 13-yard scoring pass play from Jenkins to Koser in the middle.
  • Threatening to score on the Greyhounds ensuing drive, Morrisville's Scotty Howard (Binghamton, N.Y.) knocked down the pass attempt on fourth down to force the turnover on downs.
  • Moravian had the chance to take a three-score lead into the locker room at the break, moving the ball down to the Mustangs one-yard line with seconds to go, but the punch up center was stopped short by Jordan Anderson (Jamaica, N.Y.) and Brad Burke (Ilion, N.Y.) sending the game into half with a 14-0 score.
  • Morrisville was forced to punt on their first drive of the third quarter, but the defense quickly regained possession for the hosts, forcing the fumble at their own 40 on the rushing attempt.
  • Cook punched the ball out of Rico's grasp, and lineman David Kelley (Macedon, N.Y.) recovered the ball to set up the Mustangs on their own 40.
  • After turning the ball over on downs, Morrisville's defensive unit again returned the ball to the offense on Moravian's first play of the drive, with Salvaggio hitting Koser after the catch and falling on the loose ball after popping it out of the hands of the wide receiver.
  • Morrisville drove the ball down to the Moravian one-yard line, but the Greyhounds defense made a hard-fought goal line stance to keep the hosts off the board.
  • For the third time in as many Moravian possessions, Morrisville's defense forced the visitors to cough up the ball, as Howard hit Jordan Bingham and popped the ball loose, where Brake scooped up the ball and scrambled five yards into the end zone for the defensive score.
  • Owen Cole's (Maspeth, N.Y.) point after was blocked.
  • Moravian had an opportunity to extend their lead to 10 early in the fourth, but the 27-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Jarvis, with Anderson recovering and returning the ball to the hosts on their own 12-yard line.
  • Exchanging possessions until the 1:54 mark, Moravian had the ball on the Mustangs 12 and faced a fourth down situation, but the short middle pass attempt was broken up by Salvaggio to turn the ball over to the hosts for one final offensive possession.
  • A series of passes were out of the reach of the Mustangs receiving unit and facing fourth down with just over 1:30 remaining, Britten connected with Xavier Gaines (Pomona, N.Y.) on the far sideline, but the sophomore was ruled out of bounds and Moravian returned to the field in victory formation to even the series meeting at one.

  • Morrisville will head to reining Empire 8 champion SUNY Cortland next Saturday for a 1 p.m. league kickoff in Cortland.
