Push in fourth guides Montclair past Mustang women

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Host Montclair State University rallied with three straight tallies in the fourth quarter to sneak past visiting SUNY Morrisville women's lacrosse Wednesday afternoon in Montclair, capturing the 13-10 non-league win over the Mustangs.

THE BASICS:

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville women's lacrosse fought back from a three-goal deficit after the opening quarter to tie the contest early in the fourth, but a three-goal rally by the Montclair State Hawks pushed the hosts past the Mustangs for the 13-10 non-conference win Wednesday afternoon in Montclair, N.J.
  • Montclair opened with five goals in the first quarter and looked to expand their lead in the second, but a persistent Mustang offensive squad battled to cut the lead to two at the halftime break as they outgained the hosts 3-2 in the second quarter to trail 5-7 at the break.
  • Morrisville added three tallies in the third to trail by one after three, and tied the contest 44 seconds into the fourth quarter, but a three-goal rally by the hosts found the Mustangs trailing by three with nine minutes to play.
  • Cara Walker (Phelps, N.Y.) brought the Mustangs within two after netting an extra woman tally with 4:07 to go, but that's as close as Morrisville could get as the Hawks added a final strike with 1:36 showing on the clock.
  • Montclair held the 47-23 advantage in shots over Morrisville on the day, but the Mustangs were able to place a majority on goal, registering 18 shots on net.
  • Rebecca Thomas (Marcy, N.Y.) recorded the loss despite a 16 stop effort.
  • Alana McDonald (Potsdam, N.Y.) led the Mustangs offensive efforts going 3-for-3 from the free position as she collected three goals and added an assist for four points.
