Morrisville women advance to United East final, defeat Penn College 67-45

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville women's basketball team advanced to the United East Championship Final Saturday, handing fourth seeded Penn College a 67-45 defeat in the first semifinal of tournament action in Morrisville Friday night.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • The top seeded SUNY Morrisville women's basketball team will play for a chance to defend their title Saturday as they toppled fourth seed Penn College 67-45 Friday night in semifinal action in the opening round of the United East Championship Tournament.
  • The Mustangs had five collect double figures, including Brooke Hammersley (Weedsport, N.Y.) who led the way with 16 points.
  • Hammersley added seven rebounds and an assist to her totals, while teammate Rachel Vieira (Caruthers, Calif.) chipped in 15 to go along with her game high eight assists and seven steals.
  • Carli Pardee (South Kortright, N.Y.) added 12 points off the bench, hitting four three-pointers.
  • Taylor Colone-Microni (Oneonta, N.Y.) netted 10, adding five rebounds and four assists, while Cara Walker (Phelps, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring leaderboard with 10 points.
  • Walker also led the charge for the Mustangs on the boards, snagging a team high 16 for the double-double, while collecting three blocks on the evening.
  • Morrisville, who had a slow start to the opening quarter, trailed by seven early on but quickly found their offensive rhythm as Tayghan Doorley (Hornell, N.Y.) came off the bench to nail a three form the corner.
  • Hammersley drained one from the left wing to give the Mustangs the 10-9 advantage after the opening frame.
  • Morrisville exploded for 20 points in the second, utilizing an 11-0 run to put the Wildcats behind by 10 come half.
  • The Mustangs carried momentum into the third, extending their lead to as many as 20, before heading into the final quarter of play.
  • Penn College climbed back to within 13, but couldn't shrink the deficit any more, as Morrisville closed out the contest with an 8-0 run that included back-to-back three's by Pardee.

  • Morrisville advances to the championship final against Penn St. Harrisburg. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Morrisville.
