Morrisville football closes out 2023 with road win over Hartwick

HARTWICK, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville football team closed out 2023 with two straight wins, taking the Empire 8 match over host Hartwick College by a final 38-13 score in Oneonta.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville football wrapped up the season finale with a win in Empire 8 action Saturday, outgaining host Hartwick College by a final 38-13 in Oneonta.
  • Morrisville, who posted a challenge for the Hawks on both sides of the ball, racked up 382 yards total offense, while forcing three turnovers, all interceptions in the win.
  • Senior signal caller, Steven Frerichs (Wilson, N.Y.) connected on 6-of-14 passes for 131 yards and two touchdown scores, hitting Jarrell Chaney (Albany, N.Y.) twice for 33-yards and a score and Connor Marriott (Waterville, N.Y.) once for a 12-yard scoring pass.
  • Frerichs also connected with Quamel Jarvis (Rochester, N.Y.) twice for 66-yards to contribute to the offensive gains.
  • Morrisville dominated the running game, outgaining the Hawks 273-yards to their 52, 116-net yards coming off the quick foot of freshman Isaac Sylvain (Schenectady, N.Y.) who posted a career high with a touchdown score.
  • Frerichs also added 77 yards to the Mustang totals with a score, scrambling for a long of 22 in the game.
  • Darrius Fulton (Rochester, N.Y.) led the Mustangs defensive unit with eight tackles, seven solo stops, while the trio of Eric Sparkman (Syracuse, N.Y.), Evan Salvaggio (Geneseo, N.Y.) and Barrett Masi (New Windsor, N.Y.) each added five.
  • Morrisville's defense picked off Hartwick quarterback Dennis Riordan three times, Omar Jarvis (Rochester, N.Y.) and Anai Brake (Carteret, N.J.) each posting one, while Scotty Howard (Binghamton, N.Y.) recorded one returned for a 55-yard defensive touchdown score untouched.
  • The Mustangs set the tone early in the contest, marching downfield on their first possession of the afternoon to cap off the 68-yard drive with an 11-yard scoring run from Sylvain at the 10:03 mark of the opening quarter.
  • Morrisville regained possession late in the quarter and utilized a 35-yard strike from Frerichs to Jarvis to move the ball down to the Hartwick five, before adding to their total with a 31-yard field goal from Owen Cole (Maspeth, N.Y.) early in the second.
  • On the ensuing Hartwick possession, the hosts were able to move the ball to midfield, but Howard stepped in front of the pass attempt and went untouched for 55-yards, recording the pick-six and extending the Mustang lead to 17-0 with 10:57 to go in the frame.
  • Hartwick was able to put numbers on the board with four minutes remaining before half, capitalizing on a 26-yard-deep toss to Nate Rath to move the ball to the Morrisville-22 before Riordan pushed forward a few plays later for the one-yard score.
  • Morrisville regained their 17-point lead with under a minute to go in the half, utilizing gains by Sylvain before Frerichs found Marriott for the 12-yard scoring strike.
  • The Mustangs extended their lead to 31-13 as Frerichs connected with Chaney for the 26-yard touchdown pass to complete the 57-yard drive in six plays.
  • Hartwick got one back late in the frame and attempted a comeback, but Morrisville added a final score in the fourth as Frerichs capped off his career with a one-yard push behind center for the 38-13 lead.
  • Attempting to generate offense in the fourth, Hartwick was picked off twice, the first by Brake at their own 31, and a second on the ensuing host possession but the Mustangs defense once again picked off Riordan.
  • Jarvis recorded the pick on the Mustangs 13-yard line to return possession to the visitors.
  • Morrisville ate up the clock for the remainder of the contest, ensuring the win as they wrap up the season with a 4-6 overall record, registering two straight wins.
