Morrisville football wraps up October road schedule with win at Fisher

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville football squad posted a 10-3 Empire 8 win over host St. John Fisher Saturday afternoon, improving their overall record to 5-1 as they enter their bye week.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville football led 3-0 at the half before adding a third quarter score to top the host St. John Fisher Cardinals by a 10-3 Empire 8 final Saturday afternoon in Pittsford.
  • With the win, the Mustangs improve to 1-1 in Empire 8 play, and 5-1 overall as they enter the bye week.
  • Junior quarterback Steven Frerichs (Wilson, N.Y.) completed 10-of-18 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown, hitting Justin Adams (West Babylon, N.Y.) three times for a team high 62 yards.
  • Emmett Wood (Barton, N.Y.) led the Mustang sin the running game with 32 net yards, while teammate Alex McBurnie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) collected 30.
  • Ernesto Mitchell (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) posted 11 stops for the Morrisville defense, 3.5 tackles for a loss of 22 yards, including two sacks for a loss of 19, limiting the Cardinals to just a field goal score.
  • Omar Jarvis (Rochester, N.Y.) added nine to assist the defensive efforts.
  • Justin Anderson (Jamaica, N.Y.) also registered a sack for the visitors, dropping the Cardinal quarterback 11 yards while collecting a total five stops on the afternoon.
  • Fisher forced Morrisville to a quick three-and-out on their opening drive, before attempting one of their own, but Anderson's sack forced the hosts to punt the ball away and returned possession to the Mustangs.
  • Morrisville began the drive at mid-field and after chipping away on each down to move the ball down to the Fisher 26, McBurnie broke free for a 23-yard scramble inside the five, setting up a 19-yard field goal from freshman Ryan Fish (Ithaca, N.Y.) for the 3-0 lead.
  • Fisher attempted to pull the contest even at three on their final possession of the half, but the 27-yard field goal attempt was blocked by the Mustang defense forcing the game into the locker room with a 3-0 Morrisville lead.
  • Will Brown (Amherst, N.Y.) was credited with the block.
  • The Cardinals opened the second half with a 13 play, 69-yard scoring drive, converting the 39-yard field goal to pull the contest even at three, but the Mustangs responded with the lone touchdown of the afternoon on the following possession.
  • Morrisville took to the air on two straight plays to move the ball within Cardinal territory, a nine-yard completion to McBurnie, before Frerichs hit Quamel Jarvis (Rochester, N.Y.) for the 14-yard gain to the Fisher 36.
  • Wood pushed the ball forward six yards to the 30, setting up a 30-yard scoring pass play from Frerichs to Adams for the touchdown score.
  • Owen Cole (Maspeth, N.Y.) completed the point after to make it a 10-3 Mustang lead.
  • Fisher pinned the Mustang offense deep within their own territory late in the fourth quarter and with 1:37 to go, attempted a final drive but were forced to turn the ball over on downs following a 16-yard sack by Mitchell, giving Morrisville the win.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
 
  • Morrisville will enter the bye week on Saturday, Oct. 15, returning home for the next two contests, facing Alfred University on the 22nd before welcoming Utica on the 29th.
