Mustangs offense stalls in Empire 8 loss to Utica

UTICA, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville football team stalled Saturday afternoon as crosstown rival Utica College picked up the 20-3 Empire 8 victory in the Believe Bowl in Utica.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville football fell in conference action Saturday to crosstown rival Utica College, by a 20-3 final score.
  • The Mustangs struggled to move the ball offensively, with the Pioneers limiting the visitors to 150 total yards offense on the afternoon, while racking up 320 of their own.
  • Morrisville generated 91 in the running game as Alex McBurnie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) traveled 44 yards on 11 carries.
  • Steven Frerichs (Wilson, N.Y.) added another 27 on 12 attempts, while also going 7-for-29 under center for a total 59 yards.
  • Jarrell Chaney (Albany, N.Y.) was Frerichs main target, reining in three for a total 26 yards.
  • Ernesto Mitchell (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) and Joe Miller-LaBar (Groton, N.Y.) led the defensive unit with a combined 27 total stops, Mitchell posting a team high 15 in the efforts.
  • Roland Bevans (Brooklyn, N.Y.) collected an interception, returning the ball 25 yards to assist with the defensive efforts.
  • Hunter Regels (Gansevoort, N.Y.) posted a 49.3 average in punting on the day, sending seven total for 345 yards, two 50+ yards and two touchbacks. Regels longest on the afternoon was recorded at 76 yards.
  • Morrisville took possession on the opening drive of the contest, and marched downfield, to the Utica six, before being forced to settle for the 23-yard field goal from Owen Cole (Maspeth, N.Y.) for a 3-0 lead.
  • The Mustangs held Utica scoreless until 2:15 remaining in the quarter, when they registered their first of three on the afternoon, a 11-yard scoring pass play from Sonny Badyna to Tobey Callender.
  • Utica added a second with 9:02 remaining in the second quarter on a six-yard pass completion to Nate Palmer from Badyna, sending the game into the halftime period with a host 13-3 lead.
  • After limiting the Mustangs to a three-and-out on their first possession of the third quarter, Utica added to their lead with a 70-yard scoring drive that was capped off by a two-yard rushing score from James Salles.
  • Morrisville put together a last quarter effort, but the offense stalled as Utica held the squad to drives of 21, 17 and 19 yards.
  • Badyna finished 21-for-35 under center for the Pioneers, for a total 211-yards and two touchdowns, while James Salles collected 121-net yards on 31 carries in the run game.
  • Tobey Callender collected 56 yards on his five receptions to lead the receiving unit.
