Morrisville women drop season opener

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville women's lacrosse team opened the 2020 season Wednesday afternoon on the road at SUNY Oswego, and fell in non-league action by a 13-8 final in Oswego.

THE BASICS:

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • The SUNY Morrisville women's lacrosse team dropped their season opening contest Wednesday afternoon, falling 13-8 in non-league action on the road at SUNY Oswego.
  • Morrisville's sophomore midfielder Grace Hanehan (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) led the Mustang unit with four goals, collecting a draw and ground ball in the Mustang efforts.
  • Gina Mohammed (Lagrange, N.Y.) added her first collegiate score, also notching an assist, while fellow freshman Aria Treadway (Rome, N.Y.) also posted her first collegiate goal in the efforts.
  • Makenzi Santini (Fairport, N.Y.) had a two-point outing, netting one and assisting another, while transfer Marissa Curtis (Manlius, N.Y.) rounded out scoring efforts with one as well.
  • Sophomore Kadi Bice (Lorraine, N.Y.) collected the loss between the pipes, recording 10 stops, two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
  • Playing scoreless for the opening 15 minutes of the contest, Morrisville was first to strike as Santini notched the unassisted tally for the visitors.
  • Within moments, though, Oswego notched three straight, taking advantage of the extra man twice, for the 3-1 lead.
  • Hanehan posted her first of the afternoon with 2:30 to go in the opening period, cutting the deficit to one as Oswego held the 3-2 lead at the break.
  • Oswego opened scoring four minutes into the second half, extending their lead to two, but a three-goal spurt by the Mustangs over three minutes time gave the visitors their first lead since the opening score, 5-4, with 22:03 to go.
  • Hanehan was responsible for two scores, and Mohammed notched her first of her career for the lead.
  • Oswego though, rattled off five unanswered to regain the lead, and after a goal from Curtis, posted three additional scores for the 12-6 advantage with under 10 to play.
  • Mohammed connected with Hanehan at the 5:21 mark to cut into the Oswego lead, and Treadway followed putting away the dish from Santini to make it a four-goal contest, but the final Oswego strike with 2:10 to go, sealed the win for the hosts.

  • Morrisville will open their home schedule Tuesday, March 3rd, hosting Elmira College at 4 p.m. on Drake Field in Morrisville.
