Morrisville women dominate fourth, claim 68-65 win over Houghton to open season

Box Score HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Visiting Morrisville women's basketball battled back from a six-point deficit after three quarters to top host Houghton College by a 68-65 final score Saturday late afternoon in Houghton, opening the season with a win.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting Morrisville women's basketball trailed by six after three quarters and overwhelmed Houghton in the final quarter, outscoring the hosts 22-13, as they picked up a season opening 68-65 win Saturday afternoon in Houghton.
  • Senior guard Tori Rockefeller (South Kortright, N.Y.) led all scorers with 23 points on the day, hitting 5-of-9 from beyond the arc, adding eight rebounds and two assists to her tallies.
  • Alexis Campbell (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Savannah Hobbie (South Kortright, N.Y.) also collected double figures; Campbell netting 14 points, including two free throws in the closing seconds to secure the win.
  • Hobbie posted 10 points to go along with her team high eight boards, dishing out three assists.
  • Rachel Vieira (Caruthers, Cali.) collected eight points in her first collegiate game for the Mustangs, hitting two from long range to contribute to the win, while recording three steals.
  • Morrisville collected 15 points off Houghton miscues, forcing 18 Highlander turnovers on the day.
  • Houghton held on to a five point lead until the 6:10 mark of the fourth when Campbell hit a long ball to make it a two point game, and Rockefeller followed with one of her own minutes later for a 62-61 Mustang edge.
  • Hobbie collected an offensive board with under two to go and extended the lead to three with the put back, but back-to-back layups by the hosts regained the slim one-point lead with 50 seconds to go.
  • Campbell gathered her own rebound on the ensuing possession and regained the one-point lead for the visitors, and added two free throws in the closing seconds for the three point cushion.
  • Houghton, who had two quality chances, including a three-pointer attempt that hit off the front of the rim as time expired, couldn't net another bucket as Morrisville escaped with the non-league win to open the season.
  • Morrisville shot 37.5% from the floor, draining a total 13 from long range.

  • The Mustangs will return to the court next Friday, traveling to Oswego for a tip-off tournament as they meet Clarkson University in the opening round at 5:30.
