Branca nets five to lead Morrisville State women past Bryn Athyn

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – Junior Gianna Branca (Camillus, N.Y.) registered five goals and assisted another four as visiting Morrisville State College picked up the 17-8 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) victory over host Bryn Athyn College Saturday afternoon in Bryn Athyn.

The win lifts the Mustangs to a 10-3 overall record, as they remain undefeated in NEAC action at 7-0. Morrisville State will face Penn State Abington tomorrow on the Nittany Lions home turf at noon. The Nittany Lions are currently second in the conference with a 5-1 record.

Branca, who collected six of her points in the first half, went 2-for-3 in free positions for the Mustangs, netting the eventual game winner with 3:12 to go in the opening half.

Six additional Morrisville State players contributed to the scoring as well, including Courtney Cavellier (Rodman, N.Y.) who posted four goals to go along with an assist, with teammate Celia Abbott (Shortsville, N.Y.) adding a hat trick with three scores, also assisting one.

Kallie George (Tully, N.Y.) picked up the win between the pipes, stopping three.

Morrisville State put up the first three on the scoreboard, the first coming off a free position shot by Abbott just four minutes in. Jordan Anderson (West Edmeston, N.Y.) added to the Mustang lead with an unassisted score nearly two minutes later, before Branca connected with Cavellier at 22:51.

Bryn was able to add one at the 20:25 mark, but Morrisville State responded with five straight to build a seven goal cushion, enroute to a 12-3 decision at the half in favor of the visitors.

In the second, Bryn Athyn attempted a comeback, pulling within six with just under 10 remaining in the contest, but Morrisville State scored the final three goals of the game, securing the victory.

Morrisville State outgained the Lions in draws on the day 17-12, as Elizabeth Leva (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) collected a team high seven, while contributing a score.

Game time is scheduled for a noon start tomorrow in Abington.
