Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Visiting SUNY Canton's defense came up with a big stop in extra time and had a successful clear attempt before finding the inside of the left post to claim the 12-11 non-conference overtime thriller over host Morrisville State College Saturday afternoon in Morrisville.
The loss drops Morrisville State to 3-2 overall as they return to the field Tuesday at Utica College for a final non-conference bout before opening North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play on the 31st against Hilbert.
Gianna Branca (Camillus, N.Y.) led Morrisville State's efforts with four goals, adding four assists for the eight point outing, while teammate Brianna DelColle (Huntington, N.Y.) added a hat trick behind three scores.
Courtney Cavellier (Rodman, N.Y.) and Jordan Anderson (West Edmeston, N.Y.) rounded out Mustang scoring with two goals apiece, as Kallie George (Tully, N.Y.) posted the loss in net, making five stops.
A high scoring affair in the opening half, Morrisville State held the 9-7 lead at the break, claiming the two goal advantage with three seconds to go off an unassisted tally by Anderson.
Branca had the hot stick in the opening half, netting all four scores in the first 30, three of which came on free position opportunities.
Canton, who tallied the first score of the second half, tied the game at 10 with 22:30 to go, before Branca found DelColle in the middle of the arc for the quick stick and go ahead score with 16:29 remaining.
Canton would net the game tying score with 5:39 showing on the clock, sneaking the ball inside the left post on Katelynn Nutter's eighth tally of the season, forcing the extra frame.
Nutter finished with three goals and two assists on the day.
In overtime, Morrisville State won the opening draw and worked the ball around the offensive zone before a stick check by Canton within the 8-meter forced the Mustang shot attempt to the ground and put the ball in the stick of the Roos.
Canton, who was successful on the clear, found Allison Auger who dodged the defense and blasted the game winner inside the left post just 1:34 into extra time for the sudden victory win.
