Utica women top Morrisville State 10-8

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Visiting Utica College women's lacrosse used three unanswered tallies within three minutes time late in the second period to top host Morrisville State College 10-8 in non-conference action in Morrisville Wednesday afternoon.

The Pioneers up their record to 4-3 overall, while the Mustangs drop to 1-4 to date on the season.

Rebecca Plunkett led all scorers, posting five goals for Utica, while teammate Courtney Wheeler added two, including the game winner at the 7:07 mark in the second half.

Amanda Lupo posted the win in net, saving two for the Pioneers in 44 minutes of play. Erin Jacobson started the contest and played nearly 16 minutes, allowing three goals.

Morrisville State had three score twice on the day, including Angela Marriott (Peekskill, N.Y.) who tallied two goals and assisted one. Jenna Harris (Owego, N.Y.) and Courtney Cavellier (Rodman, N.Y.) each added two to the Mustang efforts, while DeeAnna Rammelt (Westfield, N.Y.) and Brianna DelColle (Huntington, N.Y.) each added one.

Cailin Dunphy (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) recorded the loss despite a tremendous effort between the pipes for the Mustangs. Dunphy turned away 12, including a few that were on the doorstop of the crease.

Morrisville State opened the contest with three straight tallies before Utica was able to respond at the 14:22 mark to get on the board. Utica then rallied for two straight to cut the Mustang lead to one, before a score by Cavellier made it a 5-3 game in favor of the hosts with 4:28 to go in the opening frame.

Wheeler and Plunkett each posted one for the Pioneers in the closing minutes to send the game into the halftime period knotted at five.

In the second, Utica's Plunkett fired one in the back of the net just 27 seconds in to claim the visitors first lead of the contest, and Colleen Dowling added another 10 minutes later for the 7-5 advantage midway through the final period.

Morrisville State's Harris made it a one goal game just under 17 minutes to go, and the Mustangs carried the momentum through the 12:16 mark when Marriott fed a wide open Cavellier inside the 8-meter for the uncontested score to tie the contest at seven.

Utica, though, rallied for three unanswered goals within three minutes time as Plunkett broke the tie with a free position tally at 8:34, and Wheeler extending the lead to two with a score at 7:07, before Katlyn Scarpinella made it a three goal game with a tally at 5:12.

Harris added a final tally for the Mustangs at 1:09, burying the free position attempt.

The Mustangs were outgained by Utica in the ground ball game 32-25 and 29-17 in shots on the day. Both teams collected 10 draw controls each.

Morrisville State returns to the field Saturday, traveling to Clarkson University for a 1 p.m. contest.
