ROAD TO MORRISVILLE:

SUNY Morrisville Director of Athletics, Matt Grawrock, announced the selection of Ed Raby, Jr. as the head coach of the Mustangs football program in the winter of 2021 following a search this winter. Raby is the third to take the reins of the Mustang program as a member of the NCAA, Division III since the 2006 season.

“This is a great day for the SUNY Morrisville Athletic Department,” said Grawrock.

“I am extremely excited to name Ed Raby as head coach of Mustang football moving forward. He rose to the top in the search process because of his passion and drive, and I’m confident he will lead our program forward towards success in the Empire 8 conference and in the region.”

Raby was elevated to the interim role for the Mustangs in the spring of 2020 after serving as defensive coordinator for Morrisville for three seasons, while also overseeing the safety unit and serving as the program’s academic coordinator.

“Ed handled the interim title with poise and commitment through a difficult time for our team and the campus community. As we started this process it became evident our student-athletes believe in what he is looking to accomplish.

“He has done a tremendous job becoming a dedicated member of the Morrisville community, and has worked tirelessly to do more than coach football on this campus.

“I look forward to what he will be able to do for our program, the department, our campus community and am incredibly optimistic about the future of Mustang Football with Coach Raby in the lead.”

Raby came to SUNY Morrisville from Allegheny College in 2017 where he served in various roles for three seasons, including three on the defensive side of the ball as the defensive line coach in 2014 and 2016, as well as the linebackers coach in 2015.

Prior to his stint with the Gators, Raby served on the staff at Alfred University as the defensive line coach and tight ends coach, also fulfilling the role as the junior varsity offensive coordinator in 2013. His efforts with the Saxons led to a 10-4 overall record, three all-conference selections within the Empire 8, and a D3football.com All-Region and All-American selection on the defensive line.

Under his guidance during the interim role in 2021, Morrisville finished 2-8 on the season picking up the upset win over Brockport for a second year straight, while having a total of 11 student-athletes named to the Empire 8 All-Conference squads.

With two on the defensive side of the ball ranking third in tackles for a loss and total tackles on the season, Morrisville also ranked fourth overall in the Empire 8 in the running game, while ranking fifth in fourth down conversions behind five All-Conference Offensive team honorees.

As defensive coordinator during the 2019 season, Morrisville finished the season third overall in the Empire 8 in interceptions and fourth-down conversions. At the conclusion of the season four individuals ranked in the top 10 across the conference in tackles, one top five in sacks, two in the top 10 in passes defended and one in interceptions.

Prior to the 2021 season seven have earned All-Conference accolades under Raby’s direction including leading record holder in tackles, Mike Bodnar (Miller Place, N.Y.).

Aside from individual success, Morrisville as a program earned two straight bids during Raby’s time on the Mustang sidelines to post-season Bowl Championship action, hosting the ECAC Clayton Chapman Championship Bowl in 2019.

Off the field, Raby has been instrumental in involving the Mustangs in service endeavors within the local and surrounding communities, as well as increasing the academic profile of the program to record marks in the Spring of 2020, with an increasing selection of players earning recognition as Empire 8 Presidents’ List scholars each season.

Raby earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Alma College where he was a four-year letter winner and three-year starter on the defensive line. He completed his Master of Business Administration degree from Alfred University in 2014.

A member of the American Football Coaches Association, Raby serves as a member of the AFCA Convention Services Committee.

Raby and his wife, Olivia, reside in Morrisville with their two children.
